College Football Rankings: All 134 Teams Ranked. Place a bet on your favorite NCAA college football team now.
College football has grown and become more unique than ever.
This year, we have only nine conference championship games. The College Football Playoff features 12 teams. Conferences take place all around the country.
In addition, the Football Bowl Subdivision has expanded again. Welcome to Kennesaw State, a suburban Atlanta program that began play in 2015 and has recently advanced to the FBS as a member of Conference USA.
These rankings began with 130 teams in 2017, dropped to 76 to begin the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, returned to 130 in 2021, rose to 131 in 2022, expanded to 133 in 2023, and are now at 134. (Two more schools will join by 2025.)
Reminders: First, this is a subjective exercise. I review advanced analytical rankings and take them into consideration. As the season progresses, I make adjustments based on who teams have played and who they have beaten. The preseason rankings are only educated guesses. I try not to hold them too tightly. They will alter as more data comes in, and it normally takes a few weeks for everyone to have enough data points to draw firm conclusions.
I hold myself accountable at the end of each year. Here are the final 2023 standings and preseason position to compare my performance from last season. Seventeen of my top 25 teams from the preseason made it to my final top 25. Not that bad, I don’t think. But I really enjoy it when someone from outside the top 50 makes the top ten, as Tulane, Washington, and Missouri have in the last two years.
So, who is going to win it all in 2024? Who could surprise you? Who wins each conference, and who earns at-large spots in the playoffs? Who becomes the second Group of 5 program to submit a CFP? And who comes in last place?
Week zero is arrived, so let’s get started.

Can Ohio State emulate Michigan? The Buckeyes appear to have the most complete roster, with seasoned players returning to school and quality transfer arrivals such as safety Caleb Downs and running back Quinshon Judkins. Making the CFP may not necessitate a win against Michigan this time.
Georgia’s offense remains strong, but the absence of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey raises questions. This is a program that has had 15 players taken in the first two rounds during the last three years. Unlike last year, the Bulldogs will face Clemson and Alabama within the first four weeks.
Dan Lanning is 22-5 at Oregon, with three defeats against Washington. Dillon Gabriel, a former UCF/Oklahoma quarterback, can replace Bo Nix and keep the Ducks on track. Michael Penix Jr.’s departure from Washington also helps.Texas achieved its potential with a CFP appearance last year, but season-ending injuries to running backs CJ Baxter and Christian Clark are worrying. This will put additional pressure on quarterback Quinn Ewers, who will be without receivers Xavier Worthy and Adrian Mitchell. Alabama’s new coach, Kalen DeBoer, has given quarterback Jalen Milroe a sense of confidence at SEC media days. Don’t be surprised if he takes another significant step forward under this staff.
Ole Miss went all-in on the 2024 season, knowing the schedule was favorable, and the offensive line and receiver positions are strong, while the defense should improve.Notre Dame’s schedule is even more advantageous, and it would be a tremendous disappointment if the Fighting Irish did not advance to the CFP as an at-large selection. If they win at Texas A&M to start the season, they should be favorites in every subsequent game.
Michigan is difficult to forecast, having recently changed coaches and faced quarterback issues. If Donovan Edwards regains his national title game form and Alex Orji performs as well as he does in the EA Sports video game, things could get interesting. This season’s schedule includes games versus Texas and USC inside the first four weeks, eliminating any scheduling uncertainty.Florida State, with returning quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, is expected to be the ACC’s top team despite recent losses (FSU faces Clemson on October 5).Missouri ended as a top-10 team in 2023 and returns important players, including star receiver Luther Burden, to face a favorable schedule. The Tigers have a legitimate shot at making the College Football Playoff.

Utah appears to be the Big 12 favorite, with quarterback Cam Rising and tight end Brent Kuithe returning, along with a strong defense.Penn State … I’ll need to see it before I believe it, just like Texas did last year. The Nittany Lions could gain from a 12-team CFP, but I’m suspicious about quarterback Drew Allar and his pass-catching possibilities. With new quarterbacks, LSU and Tennessee should maintain their explosive and entertaining offenses. Despite my admiration for Jackson Arnold and Oklahoma’s progress, a bowl loss to Arizona with six turnovers remains a lingering memory. Let’s hope it was a one-off.
I don’t like Clemson’s trend because the team hasn’t been as good at quarterback, receiver, or defensive line as it was when it was winning national championships, but this should still be a top-10 quality roster. Is Miami talented enough to overcome its past mistakes? Cam Ward and Damien Martinez are significant additions. Mario Cristobal is not on the hot seat, but you expect to see meaningful progress.
Despite the Iowa jokes, this program has won at least ten games in two of the last three years and has never won fewer than eight games in a full 12-game season in a decade. The Hawkeyes deserve greater respect. And, certainly, if they can simply be an average offense, the schedule is really advantageous. I believe Iowa State is underrated and will be a Big 12 contender. The Cyclones return practically everything from last season, and there is no unexpected gambling scandal like last year.
Kansas State and Kansas have promising offenses, but will they be enough to compete in the Big 12?Oklahoma State won 10 games last year and has the finest rushing back in the country, Ollie Gordon II. Texas A&M’s talent has not been a problem, and new coach Mike Elko’s staff should improve quarterback Conner Weigman and others.Last year, Virginia Tech won six of its last nine games, indicating a turnaround under Brent Pry. With almost everyone back, this seems like a step-forward year towards something bigger. Brent Brennan, the new coach at Arizona, inherits a promising situation with emerging star quarterback Noah Fifita.

NC State has won at least eight games in six of the last seven seasons (but never more than nine). Don’t underestimate the Wolfpack, especially with promising transfer quarterback Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina.SMU joins the ACC after winning their first conference championship in 40 years. There is talent, but is there enough depth to support it? USC took a significant step back in Lincoln Riley’s second season. Can Miller Moss fill Caleb Williams’ shoes, and will new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn help that unit against a difficult schedule (LSU in Week 1 and Michigan in Week 4)?
Boise State, Liberty, and Memphis are among the Group of 5 favorites to begin the year. Liberty has the easiest schedule by far, but how will the CFP committee weigh last year’s Fiesta Bowl defeat if it comes down to it? Boise State faces Oregon in week two, while Memphis faces Florida State in week three.
Believing in Nebraska has been fool’s gold for years, but help me, I’m expecting a move ahead. The defense improved significantly during Matt Rhule’s first season, the schedule is favorable, and Dylan Raiola will have plenty time on the field to improve.Florida’s schedule contains eight preseason top-25 opponents and four top-10 teams, suggesting a potential for improvement beyond their final record. Washington, last season’s national runner-up, is extremely tough to anticipate because it is constantly changing its roster.
At least quarterback Will Rogers brings experience.Fresno State, a potential G5 contender, suffered a setback with the departure of coach Jeff Tedford just before camp.Brent Key, Georgia Tech’s coach, has quietly transformed the Yellow Jackets into a successful program. He is doing a wonderful job there.Fans of South Carolina, Texas Tech, and California hope for more than simply bowl games in their next seasons.

We all have feelings about Colorado. The Buffs will be better, and their schedule should be softer than last year, but they cannot afford to lose their opening against North Dakota State. Keep an eye on UNLV for the G5 CFP spot if one of the FCS quarterback transfers performs well. USF has improved from 1-11 to 7-6 in coach Alex Golesh’s first season, with returning standout quarterback Byrum Brown.Last year, Texas State finished 8-5 and reached their first bowl game. With quarterback Jordan McCloud as the Sun Belt player of the year, the Bobcats should continue to score and win.
Northwestern finished 8-5 under interim coach David Braun. What happens in 2024, with a tougher schedule and no true home stadium? New Boston College coach Bill O’Brien inherits a strong quarterback position with Thomas Castellanos. Army transitions from independent to the American Athletic Conference, while Air Force must replace its entire starting offense.
Michigan State lost several significant players in the portal, but new coach Jonathan Smith has a quarterback building brick in Aidan Chiles, a former four-star recruit who transferred from Oregon State. It’s difficult to anticipate the Pac-2 teams because both lost major players to the portal during realignment, but they’ll play Mountain West-heavy schedules.

Jacksonville State made a successful FBS debut, winning nine games and a bowl under coach Rich Rodriguez. However, the Gamecocks will need to replace key skill players.New coach Sean Lewis’ up-tempo approach promises to improve San Diego State’s game, but how will the historically strong defense fare?San Jose State has a new coach, Ken Niumatalolo, who formerly led Navy.
It appears that I rank higher in Indiana and lower in Illinois than the majority of people. Curt Cignetti, the new coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, has made notable acquisitions, including former Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke. Cignetti has a proven track record of success, as he readily admits.Despite losing important players to the NFL, Illinois has a manageable schedule and might perhaps qualify for a bowl game if coin-flips go their way.
Colorado State has the potential to be a breakout G5 club. Key players, such as quarterback Bryden Fowler-Nicolosi and receiver Tory Horton, were kept out of the portal. Deion Sanders and crew will return to Fort Collins in Week 3 for a rematch.Arkansas State feels the same way. Quarterback Jalen Raynor returned after earning Sun Belt freshman of the year honors, and Butch Jones’ strong recruitment has paid off on the field.Vanderbilt remains the lowest-ranked Power 4 team, as it was previous season. The SEC’s stricter stance makes a breakthrough seem even further away.

With quarterback Brayden Schager and all of his top receivers returning, Hawaii appears to be on track for a bowl game.Utah State has made three consecutive bowls, but is in a similar scenario as Northwestern last year. Coach Blake Anderson was sacked just before the season, and interim coach Nate Dreiling joined the staff over the offseason. This group of teams includes a number of MAC institutions that will be on the verge of bowl eligibility late in the season.
I support Georgia State’s hire of Dell McGee, and former Coastal Carolina running back CJ Beasley was a valuable addition prior to the coaching change.East Carolina’s return to bowl games led to a surprise 2-10 record. Coach Mike Houston is optimistic about a comeback, but we’ll have to see it. Sam Houston was 3-9 in its FBS debut, winning three of its final four games and losing five by a single point. A better job finishing could be on the cards. Derek Mason has taken over as coach at Middle Tennessee, a program with potential for growth. But it may take some time.
Overall, New Mexico’s hiring of Bronco Mendenhall may have been the most spectacular of the coaching carousel. He is familiar with the institution, and quarterback Devon Dampier might play a significant role. Temple finished 3-9 and lost starting quarterback E.J. Warner to Rice. It will be an uphill battle.UMass fans vowed they would not finish 133rd last year. After an excellent win against New Mexico State, the team finished 3-9 and lost their top running back to Michigan State. Some of these occupations are simply too challenging.
Kennesaw State debuts at No. 134. Until 2021, the Owls were an FCS powerhouse and a consistent top-10 team. However, they slumped to 5-6 the following year and 3-6 last year after redshirting players in anticipation for the relocation. Welcome to the party.
