Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles won seven of their last eight games and they enter their Week 13 matchup against Pittsburgh coming off an emphatic 45-10 blowout of rebuilding Arizona on Sunday that finished over the game’s 45-point total. Veteran quarterback Philip Rivers set a new NFL record for completions to start a game while tying the league record for consecutive completions.
“There were some catches that could easily fall incomplete. There were a lot of guys involved in it,” Rivers said. The potential future Hall of Famer completed his first 25 passes and finished with just one incompletion (28 of 29) for 259 yards and three touchdowns in three-quarters of action. The game also was also his 11th straight game with multiple TD passes.
“There are far-off dreams where you wonder if you are going to have a game where you are never going to miss one and then you say, `Probably not.’ The fact that we were staying there in the fourth quarter says something,” Rivers said.
The outcome snapped a four-game Under streak for the Bolts. Los Angeles is ranked seventh in scoring (27.9 ppg) and fourth in points allowed (19.9 ppg) and they’ve held six of their last seven opponents to 20 points or less.
• Under is 4-1 in Chargers last 5 games overall.
• Under is 7-2 in Chargers last 9 games following a straight up win of more than 14 points.
• Under is 21-6-1 in Chargers last 28 games in December.
• Under is 8-3 in Chargers last 11 road games.
• Under is 5-2 in Chargers last 7 vs. a team with a winning record.
• Under is 9-4-1 in Chargers last 14 games following an ATS win.
• Under is 35-16-1 in Chargers last 52 games following a straight up win.
The Steelers saw their six-game winning streak come to an abrupt end in their surprising 24-17 road loss against Denver on Sunday as Ben Roethlisberger threw two interceptions to negate one TD pass and 462 passing yards while the game’s final score played under the 47.5-point O/U total. Roethlisberger was picked off for a two-yard pick-six by Broncos interior defensive lineman Shelby Harris in the loss.
“Of all the interceptions I’ve thrown it’s one of the flukiest I’ve been associated with,” Roethlisberger said. “I never thought in a million years a defensive lineman would get blocked off the ball that far, right into an interception.”
The Steelers have played under the total in two straight but they got shut out in the fourth quarter against Denver this past weekend. Pittsburgh is ranked an impressive sixth in scoring (28.7 ppg) and 12th in points allowed (22.6 ppg).
• Over is 6-1 in Steelers last 7 home games.
• Under is 5-1 in Steelers last 6 vs. AFC.
• Over is 5-1 in Steelers last 6 games in Week 13.
• Over is 12-4 in Steelers last 16 games on grass.
Expert Pick and Prediction
For this Week 13 matchup of legitimate Super Bowl contenders, I’m going to advise you to play the over 51.5 total points – but just barely. While the under is 4-1 in the Chargers last 5 vs. AFC and 4-1-1 in their last 6 Week 13 games, the Over is 4-0 in Pittsburgh’s last 4 games following an ATS loss and an identical 4-1 in the last five meetings between these longtime AFC counterparts. I’m going with Philip Rivers and company to put four touchdowns on the board and for Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers to come close to matching it.
