New York Giants
The ‘new-look’ Giants may have come up short in their hard-fought 20-15 Week 1 loss to Jacksonville last weekend, but the G-Men actually came out of the game with nothing but positives, seeing as how they did a good job hanging in there against a team that is undeniably a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Eli Manning passed for 224 yards with one interception and no touchdowns while rookie running back Saquon Barkley shined with 106 rushing yards and one 58-yard touchdown jaunt on 18 carries. Often electrifying wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had 11 catches for 111 yards.
“I’m encouraged just because I have seen the way we work and the men we have in this locker room,” Manning said. “The talent that we have and guys taking care of each other. Just encouraged by the whole situation. We can get things going and we can play at a high level. We will make it work.”
Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys never really had a chance in their humbling 16-8 Week 1 loss at Carolina. Dallas gave up six sacks and were held to a modest 232 yards of offense in the loss. Dallas was shut out for three quarters as quarterback Dak Prescott finished with a modest 170 passing yards while Ezekiel Elliott was held to just 69 rushing yards in the loss.
“We get paid every week to come out and win football games and execute at a high level,” said Elliott, who was limited to 69 yards on 15 carries. “We didn’t have a lot of plays. We got behind. We have to start faster. That’s not Dallas Cowboys football. We can’t come out like that and lay an egg in the first half.”
Expert pick and prediction
The Cowboys won both of last season’s two meetings against the Giants after New York had won the previous three. More importantly, the Under has been the pick in each of the last four meetings, although the Overplayed out in each of the six previous meetings.
New York and Dallas have both played Under the total in five of their last six regular season games, but I’m going to urge you to play the Over in this meeting.
The Giants should definitely have a more explosive offense this season and I believe they’ll put their fair share of points on the board against a Cowboys defense that looks suspect at best. Conversely, Dallas is playing at home and they should be good for at least 21 points against New York, although they failed to reach that number in four straight meetings prior to last season’s second division battle.
The Cowboys will be completely desperate to get the win in this one, but I’m not feeling it. The G-Men look solid on both sides of the ball while Dallas clearly has some glaring issues they need to address immediately.
The Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings between these rivals when they play in the Lone Star state and I believe this week 2 matchup is going over the modest, 42.5-point total with room to spare.
Pick: Giants 28 Cowboys 24
